Not all of us experience pregnancy or birth in the way we had hoped for. Sometimes our postnatal experience can leave us with difficult feelings such as upset, distress and guilt. Logically, we know we did everything we could have done but we still feel that we let ourselves or our baby down. It might be that you don’t understand why things happened in the way they did. You are not alone and you don’t have to stay in this uncomfortable place.
Constantly replaying, or avoiding the memory as much as possible, leads to increased anxiety and anger about what you went through. This is exhausting. It wears away at your confidence and resilience. It also takes away any joy you feel in remembering these times.
I found that many mums and their partners were trying to process uncomfortable and distressing feelings around a difficult birth or postnatal experience and were asking me if I could help them with this. I felt that it was very important that I could so I completed the 3-Step Rewind Birthing Awareness Training and became an accredited practitioner.
Birth Trauma Recovery
The Three-Step Rewind Technique for Birth Trauma Recovery is a gentle and effective process that lifts the heavy, unhelpful emotions and feelings of anxiety that are attached to any negative memories related to your experiences of pregnancy, birth or your postnatal time. It alters the way you respond to those memories without changing the memories themselves. It stops those memories triggering unhelpful emotions so that you no longer feel afraid of them.
All of your experiences, the positive and the negative ones, are filed away in an efficient system that enables your brain to access them quickly when you need to. This system holds your memories. And as you know, each memory elicits a different response such as physical sensations like muscle tension, crying or laughter and also physiological reactions like the release of hormones such as oxytocin when you recall a happy experience. These responses show that your system is working.
During our sessions we will go through a guided meditation to unhook your experience from your system. Your special memories and all your wisdom will remain intact but you will notice a change in the way you react to your experience. Your reaction will be altered.
I will ask you to visualise a beautiful place in nature where you feel safe and comfortable. As you relax in this place, I will invite you to review your past experience on a television screen. All you need to do is sit comfortably, follow your breath and be guided by my gentle instruction. Please remember that I will be with you throughout.
This process is equally effective if you have aphantasia and are unable to visualise mental images. I have helped a mum who has this and she noticed a very positive change in her response to a distressing situation.
These sessions are available to mothers and their partners as it isn’t uncommon for partners to experience trauma as a result of things that they have seen.
It really is as simple as it sounds and it really is effective.
We spend three sessions of approximately one-hour together. These can be virtually via Zoom or in person where possible.
At this session, you have the opportunity to share your story with me if you wish to do so. You don’t have to if you feel uncomfortable with this. The technique is still as effective whether I know your story or not.
We also talk about your feelings. How you feel at the moment when you think about this experience and how you want to feel in the future. We talk about how differently you would like to feel when you recall your experience.
I will then guide you through a relaxation, which I will record and send to you to use prior to our next session. I am with you the entire time. This first session is mainly about creating understanding and safety so that you feel entirely comfortable with the process.
Then I guide you through the Rewind part of the technique. Please remember that you don’t have to share your experience with me or talk at all during the rewind process. I will be there with you so that you feel relaxed and safe. You will be in control at all times. We can stop or pause if you need to.
I will give you a call around a week after our third session to check in with you and see how you’re feeling.
We can talk about the changes you have experienced. I am also available to you between sessions and afterwards should you have any questions or simply want to check in with me.
How To Get Started With Birth Rewind
These sessions are booked as a three session and follow up package. The total costs are £199 using Zoom or £299 in person, at my Wellbeing Pod in Moseley, Birmingham. I am very happy to travel to you if you are based within 30 minutes of Moseley. Additional costs are agreed on an individual basis. I am very happy to travel to you if you feel more comfortable in your own home.
