Five Differences Between A Mother Circle and A Self-Help Group

Health & Wellness, Mother Circles, Motherhood, Wellbeing

Women have gathered together for centuries. We have gathered in Circle and created our own communities. Yes, Circles are a form of self-help group but they are also different.

Here are 5 differences between a Mother Circle and a self-help group:

Focus: A Mother Circle typically focuses specifically on supporting and empowering mothers, providing a safe space for them to connect, share experiences, and receive emotional support. On the other hand, a self-help group may have a broader focus and could encompass a variety of topics or issues, such as physical recovery, mental health, or grief support, that are not exclusively related to motherhood.

Structure: Mother Circles often emphasise a more informal and organic structure, with a leader guiding the Circle in a very gentle way. The discussions and sharing are participant-led; each mother is given space for her own voice and sharing. The emphasis is often on building community, fostering connection and creating a sense of a shared lived experience. Self-help groups, on the other hand, may have a more structured format with specific agendas, goals, and guidelines that are established by the group or organisation that hosts the group.

Purpose: Mother Circles are focused on creating a supportive space for mothers to share their experiences, challenges, and joys of motherhood. A dedicated brave space to receive emotional support, empathy, and understanding from other mothers. Self-help groups, on the other hand, may have a broader purpose or goal, such as providing education, resources, or practical strategies for managing a particular issue or challenge.

Group Dynamics: Mother Circles  focus on creating a sense of sisterhood and mutual support among mothers, with a nurturing and empathetic approach. Self-help groups may have a different group dynamic depending on the topic or issue being addressed, and may involve problem-solving, goal-setting, or accountability.

Approach: Mother Circles emphasise a holistic approach to motherhood, considering the emotional, mental, physical, and spiritual aspects of the mother’s experience. The focus is on creating a supportive and nurturing environment for mothers. Self-help groups, on the other hand, may take a more problem-solving approach, focusing on practical strategies, coping skills, and solutions for addressing a specific issue or challenge.

It’s important to note that both Mother Circles and self-help groups are valuable and supportive in their own ways, and the specific differences may vary depending on the group’s facilitation, structure, and goals. Each group varies based on the leader and the participants. They are all unique.

When leading a Mother Circle, set out clearly and compassionately what the Circle does and doesn’t offer. A Mother Circle won’t be for everyone but it will be an essential avenue of support for the mums who join one.
